Bad lawn mowing practice is the single most damaging input to any lawn. The great British tradition is often to scalp grass to within as inch of its life. Almost all domestic lawns consist of grass types that will not appreciate this. When grass is left to be a little longer it will naturally tiller (produce more leaves per plant) Not only does this improve the look of the grass but it shades the base of plants and the earth from the sun and most importantly allows grass to dominate the area thus reducing space for undesirables such as weed and moss.

Watering

Watering your lawn is often a personal choice. If you decide during dry periods that you are going to irrigate to keep some life in the grass it is best irrigated less frequently for longer periods. For example. If you planned to irrigate 4 times per week for half an hour each time you would be better to irrigate once for 2 hours therefore allowing water to penetrate deeper into the soil stimulating roots to grow downwards in search of the moisture.

A good method for gauging how much water you are applying is to place a mug or cup on the lawn and time the period needed to add say half and inch of water. By doing this you are able to more accurately apply known amounts of water.

Pets

Dogs urinating on lawns will often cause scorch marks on the grass caused by the excess amount of urea. There are products available in the pet store for combating this but the best method is to apply water to the area immediately after the dog has finished to help dilute the urea. Many people swear by adding 1 tablespoon of Heinz ketchup to their dogs food as an instant cure for urine burns on lawns!
